The Painter - Shading WIP by Slaskia The Painter - Shading WIP by Slaskia
Just showing that I haven't forgotten about this piece.

Yes...I am a dirty cheater and used various Photoshop filters for the wood and wall textures (I did try to paint the wood texture by hand, honest, but it was just too tedious....)

i love the hand pose. its tough to draw sangheilios hands because they are not human hands.
they have two thumbs and two fingers (which i thank bungie for doing that because all the other aliens i see have numerous fingers but only one thumb)
and that sangjeili looks somehow feminine. am i right?

Aye, I agree. Hands need to be more 'alien' on alien characters.

And this individual is a male, however his slight femininity is on purpose. ;)

This is epic, and I think I know who it is, Henun? He does appear to be lacking an arm...

Wow, this is so fantastically beautiful. :)

I always wondered if the Sangheili had time for art at all, but chose to believe they do. This piece reminds me a bit of the stylized ancient Greek art you see on ceramics.

I believe they do, but only as a serf's job and even then, only if the subject matter is about warriors, war and conquest. Thus, their art style is not that developed like ours has become.

Good points. On the other hand, I bet you need to be quite important to be allowed to etch the keep's saga into the walls, like explained in the novels? So perhaps only really important Sangheili make art?

Hm, that is a point. All we know is that the Sagas are chisled into the stone, but nothing about who does it. I imagine they have to be really experienced though...As I wouldn't be surprised if heads would roll if the carver made a mistake....

Exactly! Don't you just love that piece of The Cole Protocol, when the elder, Koida meets his end?

I imagine the technique might take years of perfecting. I always imagined there would be scribes or poets who gather and safeguard the keep's war poems and important texts though. What do you think about that idea?

I do know I have one keep that have an entire 'sect' (for lack of a better word), devoted to just that. I don't know how the other's do it though.

Excellent idea. Each keep's history must be mega-important to the following generations, so they might indeed have sects devoted to it.

Well, the keep in this case is quite different in many ways. Very different. Which I hope to tell a bit of in one of the Zendou story arcs.

it brings out the emotion more.
And I don't think anyone blames you for photoshop, it's an ossim program. And, if it makes your work look ossim, than I don't think anyone's gonna complain.

Photoshop itself no, but professional digital painters in general frown on using 'short cuts' like the filters in Photoshop.

Oh. That's dumb, though.
especially since you start your work on paper and all...

Hm, the heili looks fairly wrinkly. I'm guessing a bit elderly :)

Actually he's fairly young. Just the method of texturing him makes him look wrinkly. I will probably will go in and try to smooth things out a bit on him....

Pardon my nitpicking, but whenever I see dA pics of Sangheili it seems their claws are the same color as their skin; I would think they'd be black, or even clear like human fingernails (I'm leaning towards the former, clear claws don't make much sense). Just sayin', bein' a bother, that's all =P

I usually don't bother making the claws/nails on the hand a different color, mainly because it is such a small area that you wouldn't be able to see much difference anyway: especially once you take shading into account. If I did make them a different color, I would make them either a slightly lighter or darker color than the base skin tone. Just my thing.
